jornales

for a moment of joy or moments no one pays for, i give myself a ‘jornal’. this makes me rich. try it.

day in the park (for Friday Poetically with Brian at OSP)

Crow in Bowen Island, BC

a cat eats weed flowers
my dog sits on the bird bath
mom spreads a picnic basket
for baby’s feeding bottles

three crows swoop in
on my bag of popcorn,
a weed flower sticks
to my dress

baby drools
on her blue bib the sky turns
golden, i gather the crumbs
under the blooming junipers

i pull up a heather, a
squirrel flies over my head
on a twig chippers chatter—
my heather turns blue

baby picks a dandelion
the sun slides down, over skies
a swarm of snowbirds
fly home

the bride (for One Shoot Sunday)

dawn
settles on her barefeet
a starling craving to
flex wings

the ground quivers
from her tender steps unease
spreads
among wet stones

she wiggles
off her restless sighs
to undo her veil of wind
her hair loosens

strands of singing
rise over the heartbeat
of sparrows
she becomes a pair of wings

shirred skirt
the feathers she preens
to a sheen that stuns
a hesitant sun

the day flexes
on her limbs a thrumming
wakens the tender
lilies she stalked in her dreams

she steps into
her gaping red shoes
the brooding crows
scatter

a ruckus spreads
among the dandelions
the seagulls catch in fevered
pitch

she walks
parting the congregation
in blindness deaf
to the grumbling

over the rise
among the pines she raises
her arms an arc
to the sky

a swallow
skimming the meadow
where heads limp in the breeze
but balloons from her wedding

the gulls shriek
it pierces her flight
she careens
down the hill snags

a thread of her dream
first a thump
of the wearied balloon
that pumped her wings

next her toes
like a bird poised to fly
in a fall

squabbling crows/sunny day at Zoo/the drum beat of rain NaHaiWriMo prompts turned tanka!

1. Prompt #24 flower
squabbling crows
scream into my thoughts–
at dawn how you left
hollow imprints of sleep
scented dreams of jasmine blooms

2. prompt #25–zoo
sunny day at Zoo
lioness searches for my eyes
behind my black shades–
the way we hold our hearts
as we speak of fears and wants

3. prompt #26–drum
the drum beat of rain
on window pane imprints tears
a flood breaking hearts
in loneliness gray rain sneaks
into wells to fill the dryness

Tanka drafts I should call these because I’m certain that when I read them tomorrow, they will sound bad. These came as spontaneously as the haiku I’ve been posting on the NaHaiWriMo wall. There’s an energy that takes over at the site like a hand that holds my wrist as I pause or pose to let the first word dance on the screen. It’s the presence of so many other haiku writers– whose names I recognize from the Shiki kukai and haiku journals even some haijin–that I think itself serves as the prompt and the word, a prop. The experience, though I hopped in only on Day 19, has been exhilarating.

day after Christmas/on frosted peaks

1.
day after Christmas–
crows waddling to bus stop
no one awaits

2.
on frosted peaks
somehow
a glow in the winter sky
