  1. These are beautiful haiku. You have a genius for them, comparable to the great poets. This one:

    first dawn alone–
    the widow eats his half
    of the orange

Is especially touching. And this too:

    twilight rain
    the blue heron mid-lake
    somehow smaller

Creates a subtle mood every bit as compelling as any classical haiku. And this:

    autumn rain
    the river carries
    the sky

Takes my breath away. I don’t like literary competitions, and so I don’t submit my poems, but I can’t imagine why these weren’t first place poems. My standard is jealousy. If I’m jealous that I didn’t write them, then I couldn’t be happier.

    • Wow, Patrick!! How wonderful to hear from you, but even more heartwarming, your kind words that’s sending me soaring! I haven’t forgotten how you picked up my first published haiku at LYNX (fortunately gone with the passing of both Jane and Werner Reichold), introducing me to your readers at upinvermont. I’m so happy that jornales still pops up in your inbox. Thank you so much! By the way, my first ever collection, ‘counting star-bones’ (20 of my ‘gendai haiku’ ) can now be accessed at The Haiku Foundation Digital Library with this link: https://www.thehaikufoundation.org/omeka/files/original/bfefc368798b1f98cbbc510ea9fa2aee.pdf Do try to read through it if you have time.
